Social Justice and Struggle in Lebanon and Syria: Elia J. Ayoub and Leila Al-Shami

This week on The Final Straw we’re featuring a chat with Elia J. Ayoub, a Lebanese-Palestinian writer and researcher, and Leila Al-Shami, a British-Syrian activist and author. For the episode we discuss resistance movements in the last 30 years in Lebanon and Syria, the ongoing anti-sectarian and anti-regime protests in Lebanon, the Syrian civil war and diaspora, and shared elements between the two situations. We also talk about the western left and media, it’s failings at solidarity and some ways it can learn from and support social justice movements emanating from that region.

This week on The Final Straw, the episode’s theme is anarchist interventions in struggles around the world. We’ll be sharing audios from comrades in the A-Radio Network, which just had it’s 5th Annual Gathering in Zurich, Switzerland, and our comrades at Dissident Island Radio in London, UK. The interviews will cover issues related to the Rojava Revolution in northern Syria in which anarchists have engaged as fighters, medics, media, construction workers, cooks and in many more ways. And then we’ll hear about anarchists engaged in the Yellow Vest anti-austerity protests in France, a diverse movement that includes far rightists, liberals, conservatives and anti-capitalists.
